The growing use of the term Ọ̀lọ́ọ̀rẹ́ in Ogbomoso’s political discourse has sparked a conversation about what truly constitutes meaningful benevolence and service to the people.
In a commentary authored by Temitidayo, the writer questioned whether political generosity should be measured only by immediate material assistance or by opportunities capable of improving people's lives in the long term.
The commentary noted that Ogbomoso residents have benefited from different forms of political assistance over the years, including food, cash, materials, employment opportunities and political appointments.
It, however, argued that there is a fundamental difference between temporary relief and creating opportunities that can provide sustainable livelihoods.
At the centre of the commentary is Hon. Babatunde Oyelade, whose father served as Chairman of the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).
According to the writer, his father's tenure was associated by beneficiaries with employment opportunities that reached people in Ogbomoso and other parts of the state.
The author argued that employment could have a broader impact on families than one-off financial or material assistance, noting that a stable income can help households meet educational, healthcare and other essential needs.
The commentary therefore posed a broader question about the meaning of Ọ̀lọ́ọ̀rẹ́ — asking whether true benevolence should be judged by what is given to someone at a particular moment or by the lasting opportunities created.
“What exactly did your benevolence leave behind?” the writer asked, contrasting temporary assistance with opportunities that could continue to provide benefits for years.
The author further argued that sustainable empowerment should create capacity rather than dependency, suggesting that the most valuable form of giving is one that changes the direction of a person's life.
“The greatest act of benevolence is not what you put in someone’s hand—it is the opportunity you put in someone’s life,” the commentary stated.
Against this backdrop, the writer described Oyelade as an Omo Oloore and called on residents to reciprocate what the author described as his family's contributions by supporting his political ambition.
The commentary subsequently urged voters in Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South and Oriire Federal Constituency to vote for Hon. Babatunde Oyelade in his bid for the House of Representatives.
It concluded by stressing that acts of kindness and service should be remembered beyond immediate political moments.
