The Osun State Government has approved the establishment of a Joint Security Task Force to bolster responses to threats against lives and property, following recent security alerts.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the State Security Council convened by Governor Ademola Adeleke and chaired by Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi. The new Commissioner of Police attended in person, together with other security commanders.
The state government said it stands ready to supply all necessary logistics to ensure the smooth launch of the task force and to strengthen the protection of residents across Osun.
Opening the meeting, which lasted several hours, the Deputy Governor conveyed the Governor’s best wishes to the service commanders. He praised their steadfastness during recent challenges and urged them not to relent in the face of fresh threats.
He was accompanied by the Attorney-General, Hon. Wole Jimi-Bada; the Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina; and the Governor’s Special Adviser on Security, Mr Samuel Ojo.
Prince Adewusi told the commanders that the Governor remains committed to further empowering the security agencies. He also called on traditional rulers to maintain their local security oversight.
The Council sought to reassure residents that Osun State remains safe and secure. It urged the public to stay extra vigilant, particularly around churches, mosques and schools, and advised stakeholders to put additional security measures in place at these premises.
Residents were asked to share timely intelligence with the security agencies to help forestall attacks by suspected terrorists and bandits.
The Nigeria Police, working with other security agencies, were directed to maintain a 24-hour red alert to curb the threats.
An agreement was also reached between the Ministry of Justice, the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services to ensure that all suspects are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted without delay.
The meeting concluded with a commendation for the new Commissioner of Police, Mr Ibrahim Zungura, for the policing reforms he has introduced since taking office and for attending the security meeting in person.
