Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State left Nigeria on Sunday for a short holiday in Europe, during which he will also undergo medical checks. He has simultaneously directed an official investigation into a disputed kingship appointment in Koka town, Obokun Local Government Area.
The governor departed from Lagos airport bound for the United Kingdom and other destinations still to be announced.
In a statement issued before his departure, he said: “I am taking a short break to refresh and get further prepared to serve the good people of Osun state.”
At the same time, Governor Adeleke instructed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to examine the circumstances surrounding reports that a second king had been appointed for Koka Ilase, creating the appearance of dual claimants to the stool.
The ministry has been told to review the situation thoroughly and ensure that due process is followed in accordance with the state’s chieftaincy laws and traditional practices.
“I read of another King appointed outside the one on the stool. The ministry is hereby directed to look into the dispute and issue a report to set the records straight,” the governor stated.
He appealed to all parties involved to remain peaceful while the inquiry proceeds. “I however urge all stakeholders to remain peaceful as the ministry does the needful. Kingship is governed by extant laws and regulations and the government will stand by the law and tradition of our people,” he added.
