Funke Akindele faces criticism over absence from Kamo State’s movie premiere

Skitmaker Kamo State and Nollywood actress Funke Akindele

Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has come under criticism on social media following her absence from the premiere of her protégé, skit maker Akinyoola Ayoola, popularly known as Kamo State.

Kamo held the Lagos premiere of his debut cinema film, Star Lomo, on Sunday, but Akindele was noticeably absent from the event.

Her absence has sparked questions among some social media users, particularly given the close relationship the actress and skit maker have publicly shared in recent years.

Kamo’s association with Akindele became more prominent during the production and promotion of Everybody Loves Jenifa in 2024. He later appeared in other projects linked to the actress, including Aiyetoro Town Season 2 and Behind The Scenes.

Akindele also frequently featured Kamo in content shared on her social media platforms and had publicly supported some of his projects. She was also seen hosting Kamo and his wife and attended his wedding.

However, their frequent appearances together appeared to reduce earlier this year, with Kamo featuring less regularly in Akindele’s social media content.

The development, coupled with Akindele’s absence from the Star Lomo premiere, has led some social media users to speculate that the pair may have had a disagreement. However, there has been no public confirmation from either Akindele or Kamo that they are no longer on good terms.

The speculation was further fuelled by Akindele’s absence from the Lagos premiere while she was in Ghana on a staycation with singer Waje, who is also part of the cast of her forthcoming film, The Four.

One social media user, Depegan of Lagos, questioned why Akindele did not attend the premiere, noting that Kamo had previously supported the actress during her own movie promotions.

Others, however, defended Akindele, pointing to her previous support for Kamo.

Fúnmilọ́lá A. argued that Akindele’s role in Kamo’s rise to prominence should not be overlooked, while another user, Vgooduc, noted that the actress had attended Kamo’s wedding, supported his child’s naming ceremony and featured him in her films.

Other users also highlighted Akindele’s previous promotion of Kamo’s work, including his YouTube project Ilu Le, arguing that her absence from one event should not be interpreted as a lack of support.

Some commenters, however, maintained that the change in their public interactions suggested that the relationship may have cooled.

Despite the online debate, there is currently no confirmed evidence that Funke Akindele and Kamo State have fallen out.

Their previous collaborations and public displays of support remain well documented, while the reason for Akindele’s absence from the Star Lomo premiere has not been publicly disclosed.
