The legal team of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has strongly denounced a purported election petition filed in the names of the party and its gubernatorial candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, which seeks to challenge the victory of Governor Nurudeen Jackson Ademola Adeleke in the 15 August governorship election.
In a statement issued by Dr Abiodun Layonu (SAN), the team said its attention had been drawn to a “bundle of papers” being referred to as an election petition.
The document claims to have been filed on behalf of Oyebamiji and the APC against the incumbent governor, who was declared the duly elected Governor of Osun State.
According to the statement, both the party’s candidate and the entire legal team were shocked by the emergence of the papers. Neither Oyebamiji nor the APC had authorised the filing of any such petition.
“Our clients and the entire legal team were shocked to read the purported Petition as neither the candidate nor the party authorised the filing of same,” Dr Layonu stated.
The legal team rejected the document in the clearest terms, describing it as unauthorised and without any basis in the party’s instructions.
“We hereby denounce in absolute terms the purported Petition filed in the name of APC and its gubernatorial candidate,” the statement continued.
“We urge our members and the general public to discountenance the purported Petition as same did not emanate from the legal team.”
The team emphasised that the papers did not originate from the APC legal team and should therefore be disregarded by party members and the wider public.
