Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has commiserated with residents and families affected by the recent flooding in parts of the state, directing the Special Task Force on Environmental Sanitation to visit affected communities and assess the situation.
The governor, while expressing concern over the impact of the flooding on homes, businesses and livelihoods, attributed the situation partly to excessive rainfall recorded across the state in recent weeks.
According to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke directed the Special Task Force on Environmental Sanitation, led by Elder Ayanleye Aina, to visit the affected areas and prepare a response plan for the administration.
The governor recalled that his administration had previously undertaken dredging and drainage interventions aimed at improving water flow and reducing the risk of flooding across the state.
He assured affected residents that the government would take further measures where necessary to mitigate the impact of the flooding and protect lives and property.
Governor Adeleke, however, stressed the importance of community responsibility in preventing flooding, particularly the need to keep waterways and drainage channels free from obstruction.
“I urge my people, the residents of Osun State, to stop dumping refuse on waterways, roadside and desist from building on natural water channels as well as flood-prone corridors,” he said.
He warned that government interventions alone could not achieve the desired results if waterways continued to be obstructed by human activities.
The governor also urged residents to report blocked drainages, flooding incidents and other environmental hazards to the appropriate authorities to enable timely intervention.
He assured residents that the state government would continue to monitor the situation and take additional measures to protect lives, property and communities across Osun State.
