The Election Violence Relief Committee, chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Adewale Olumide Egbedun, held its inaugural meeting on Thursday and called on victims of election-related violence to come forward with their cases.
Speaking at the maiden session, Egbedun welcomed members and thanked them for accepting to serve at what he described as a critical moment in the state’s history.
He said the committee’s assignment was both humanitarian and sensitive, with a duty to listen to victims, verify genuine claims and ensure appropriate relief reached those who suffered losses.
The chairman assured the public that the panel would act fairly, transparently and without prejudice. Every submission would be treated with seriousness, guided by facts, fairness and compassion.
A number of complaints had already been received and collated, he noted, and further submissions would be welcomed.
Egbedun particularly appealed to those still receiving hospital treatment for injuries sustained in the violence to present their cases, preferably through relatives or representatives.
Where such matters were brought forward, the committee would liaise with the hospitals concerned to establish the victims’ condition and ensure necessary medical attention. He further assured victims, their families and the hospitals that the government remained committed to covering the approved cost of treatment.
The chairman expressed profound appreciation to the Adeleke Dynasty for its compassionate intervention on behalf of children who lost parents or benefactors during the recent violence.
Through the Springtime Development Foundation, the dynasty had decided to sponsor scholarships for the children of those who died. Egbedun described the initiative as a remarkable demonstration of humanity and commitment to the welfare of vulnerable families.
He noted that education remained one of the most enduring ways of honouring the memory of the deceased, offering their children hope, dignity and the chance of a brighter future.
As chairman, he pledged the committee’s support in ensuring the scholarships reached the intended beneficiaries transparently and effectively, and thanked the Adeleke Dynasty and the foundation for standing with affected families when they needed support most.
Egbedun reiterated the committee’s determination that genuine victims would not be overlooked and that the relief process would remain credible, transparent and responsive.
He wished members a successful start to their assignment and prayed for the continued peace and wellbeing of the people of Osun State.
